The IucA/IucC PKL family is involved in the biosynthesis of the siderophore aerobactin. Siderophores are small molecules produced by microorganisms to scavenge and acquire iron, an essential nutrient for their growth and survival. Aerobactin is a specific siderophore produced by some pathogenic bacteria [PMID: 3087960].
